It's getting to be that time of year again. The WVDE affords us the opportunity, due to our extended length days at certain schools, to use that time to be able to have alterative learning days in the event of inclement weather. In Preston County, we call those Brain Freeze Days. Below, you will find the information you will need in the event one of these days are called. Any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher or building principal.

Yesterday, 7th and 8th grade students at Central Preston and German and History students at Preston High School were provided with a first-hand account of life during and after World War II from a Holocaust survivor. Of the approximately 1.6 million Jewish children who lived in Europe before World War II, only about 100,000 survived the Holocaust. Maud Dahme was one of them. Mrs. Dahme provided students with accounts as a condensed version of her autobiography, "Chocolate, The Taste of Freedom,” which chronicles her wartime adventures as well as her post-war experiences — reunion with parents, immigration, U.S. schools, marriage and time as a Holocaust education advocate. To say these students were treated to an experience yesterday would be an understatement. Preston County Schools would like to thank Mrs. Dahme for her time, as well as the efforts of all of those who planned and made this possible for these students.

We have had a very busy couple of weeks at Preston High. Throughout the day today we will be updating everyone with some exciting events that have happened around campus.
The first set of pictures are of our very own senior, Colson Manko, presenting an idea to all middle school principals. He and the curriculum directors are brainstorming some strong learning activities for Preston County students.

Menu Change:
Due to the anticipated weather forecast, the Thanksgiving School Meal originally on the menu for this Thursday the 21st, will now be served on Wednesday the 20th just in case there's any kind of schedule change. We want to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to enjoy a nice Thanksgiving Meal prior to break.

At approx. 1:45 (current time), Friday, November 15th, 2024, an event, unknown to students, kicked-off that should result in the school going into lockdown. This is a planned DRILL in cooperation with school admin, county admin, safety/security director, and the law enforcement, to better prepare our students and staff in the event of an actual emergency. If you receive communication from your student during this time, or hear or see chatter on social media, again THIS IS ONLY A DRILL. We hope that this training and continued training for our students will better prepare them and our staff in the event of an actual emergency.

Today's Board of Education meeting was full of recognitions. Preston County Schools is always happy when given the opportunity to showcase and recognize our amazing students and student athletes. The PCBOE had the opportunity to recognize the PHS Skills USA participants who represented us so great, our always incredible FFA students, and the never disappointing PHS Cross Country Teams. We're so proud of all of these students.

Multiple groups coordinated efforts to recognize our local veterans. Our students spoke of the branches. their sacrifices and skills needed. Another student led everyone in a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers. Veterans were provided breakfasts from the ProStart program and flowers from the Floriculture class. Thank you to all who participated today, we are glad you were able to join us!

Friday, November 8, from 6-9 pm, Mr. Cool set up two of his own personal telescopes and one owned by PHS. These were not your typical home telescopes; they were able to filter and magnify so that students could see the shadows from the rings on Saturn. We could see the color defined in Jupiter as well as 4 of the moons rotating around it. He introduced the Pleaides cluster and other characteristics in the night sky. Thank you, Mr. Cool, for giving this opportunity to our students.
