The Preston County Board of Education recognized three groups for their accomplishments during the day time board of education meeting on Monday, November 13, 2023. The groups recognized were: The Preston High School Girls Cross Country Team (placed 2nd in Big 10 and ranked 4th overall in state meet) & Boys Cross Country State Qualifier - Damian Rumer. The girls team includes (name and grade): Ella White (12), Hallie Simmons (11), Hannah Liston (10), Autumn Myers (10), Delilah Myers (10), Leighton Biermann (9), Ava Simmons (9), and alternate Sophia Saurino (9). Also recognized was PHS Cross Country Coach Paul Martin. The next group recognized was PHS FFA members and their teachers - Mrs. Samantha Funk and Mr. Terry Hauser. Mrs. Funk was recognized for achieving the Honorary American FFA Degree (a story concerning this honor is posted on prestonboe.com under News) earlier this month at the national convention in Indianapolis. According to Hauser, "it is a cherished tradition [for students] to make the trip [to the national convention]...and this year the convention was just shy of 73,000 registrations. It is a privilege to take our rural youth to the big city and let them experience all that has to offer." Funk added that while in Indianapolis, students were able to see a rodeo, tour Fair Oaks Farm (producers of Fair Life Milk) (where they have 3,000 cows and 9,000 hogs), and make new friends from across the state and country." And the final group recognized was the PCS Transportation Department for ranking 4th out of 55 counties in the state for proficiency (see story at prestonboe.com under News).

Preston High School Sophomore Wins National Derby Title Preston High School sophomore Jacob “Jake” Hostutler won the National Demolition Derby Championship on October 8, 2023. Hostutler comes from a family of derby enthusiasts. His father, Jared Hostutler, is a former derby champion, and his mother, Samantha Cramer, as well as her father, have all participated in demolition derbies. Jake has been competing 3 or 4 years now, according to his mother Samantha, who said, “as a mom it is nerve-wracking to watch him run, but I am so proud of him.” She added that Jake’s been in the garage since “before he was born” and was always helping his dad. A few years ago, Jake took interest, and his passion took off from there. This is the first time Jake’s won nationals, and his competition was steep with a class of approximately 50 competitors vying for the national title. Jake primarily races locally and this year that included Ohio and Pennsylvania. The national championship was held in Fayette County, PA, in Dunbar. Jake said it just takes hard work and close attention to win. He said basically he “goes out there and just drives.” Jake said he was “a little happy” when he won, but he gave a big smile talking about his win. His trophy, he said, is four feet tall, and is now in the living room at his dad’s house. He hopes he can go back to the national competition again next year. In the meantime, Jake is working on getting his actual driver’s license and taking classes at PHS including CTE classes in structural analysis and damage repair. While Jake isn’t sure what his future holds yet, he said demolition derby racing has sparked an interest in mechanics and collision repair. Do you have a story to share? I wanted to share with you the finished painting from the field trip on Tuesday. These students had a great learning experience. The Caring for Kids Campaign began 11/1 today and runs through December 13. Patrons can donate $1 per vote for the PHS window design. The proceeds remain local and benefit the WVU Medicine Children's Hospital in Morgantown. They figured out early in the process that drawing and painting on glass was much more difficult than they thought! Special thanks to Carrie Dean, the manager at Eat N Park for the opportunity participate in this fundraiser campaign and the complimentary lunch.
