PHS Students Help to Revive Terra Alta Community Through Art
On Friday, April 26, 2024, Steve Wise and Rich Hopkins, directors of the Terra Alta Christian Foundation, awarded three Preston High School (PHS) students with cash awards for their artwork. A total of 86 PHS art students entered the contest to create a billboard design for the community of Terra Alta. The theme for the contest, said Wise, is to encourage the citizens of Terra Alta to take pride in their community and help to revive it. The student artwork was judged on the overall response to the theme, the demonstrated creativity, how aesthetically pleasing the piece is, the potential for the design to work on a billboard, etc. Wise told the winners that his foundation was looking for encouraging messages to the citizens of Terra Alta and their work stood out as the best. Wise added that the foundation hopes to make this an ongoing contest where future students will design the next round of billboards; he encouraged the students to participate in the future, but also to get involved within their own Preston County communities. Wise said, “when you graduate, stay, and make a difference in your community. Every voice should be heard and yours can make a difference.”
The Terra Alta Christian Foundation is a young organization (2 – 3 years old) with the goal of improving the town of Terra Alta through a variety of projects as well as raising one-million-dollars over the next ten years to support the vision.
The art project began in May of 2023 through a conversation between Wise and PHS art Teacher Tiffany Hardy. Initially, Wise had the idea to create a mural project, and that still may happen at some point in the future, but the billboard contest developed and was carried out. Wise intends for the art and other future projects to celebrate the history of Terra Alta and inspire the citizens to improve their community because “together we can all make a difference.” Wise told the audience the reason for this contest stemmed from the fact that “art and music lift the human spirit and beauty draws out the very best in us,” and that is why the foundation believes the students artwork is a great beginning for improving Terra Alta.
The contest at PHS was sponsored by art teachers Tiffany Hardy and Michele Rodich. Both of whom were very proud of their students and their dedication to art. The winners for the first billboard contest were: 1st place Jayden Livengood, whose theme was “Together We Can Revive;” 2nd place Cory Stone; 3rd place Jaydyn Wolfe. All three students are freshmen at PHS. The students each received a check from the foundation in addition to their accolades.
