Due to anticipated winter weather conditions this week, the County Social Studies Faiir will be postponed this week and moved to next week Setup will now take place at the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department on Tuesday, February 18th from 5-7 PM and the fair will take place on Wednesday, February 19th with public viewing of projects from 5-7 PM and awards beginning at 7 PM.
Several additional KES students, and even one staff member, were recognized for reaching Beanstack goals and completing reading challenges on Friday! These individuals received brag tags and a school-wide Stag Wag for reading and logging minutes. Not only are they learning about new people, places, and things in the books they read; they are building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills needed for continued academic success!

After assessment of roads in the eastern portion of the county, Preston County Schools will now operate on a 3-hour delay for today, Thursday, February 6th.
Preston County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay for tomorrow, Thursday, February 6th. Maintenance, mechanics, & custodians report on a regular schedule, & all other students & staff will report on a 2-hour delay. Road conditions will be assessed in the morning and if circumstances warrant, the day could be shifted to a 3-hour delay or result in cancellation of school.
Due to impending winter weather in the eastern portion of the county, all after-school activities including school-sponsored sports as well as youth league games and practices are cancelled for tonight. Any school delay or cancellation status for tomorrow will be updated later today.
We have been in contact with a number of local clinics who have seen an uptick in strep, flu and a stomach virus. This is just a friendly reminder that as we work to keep our students and staff healthy this winter, please be reminded that if your child stays home or is picked up sick from school, he or she should not return until they are symptom free for 24 hours without medication. This includes fever (100.4+), cough, vomiting, and diarrhea. Remember you have 10 parent notes to use for the year in case of an absence. Be sure to turn either this or a doctor's slip in so we can mark your child excused.

At Kingwood Elementary, our social successes are just as important to us as academic ones! When our students refine their social skills, they are better prepared to face real-world challenges later on in schooling and in the outside world! Each month, students who demonstrate our character education program, PurposeFULL People, monthly character traits are nominated by their peers to be recognized for helping to make the world around them a better place. As promised, our grade level with the highest number of logged reading minutes in Beanstack over the holiday break received a snowball celebration incentive! Yesterday, second graders had some extra recess time in the gym devoted to a snowball battle! In addition, a few students were recognized by a school-wide announcement and issuing of reading “brag tags!” Individual students earned these rewards by reading, logging their reading minutes, AND completing the monthly challenges. Remember, the more our students read, the more they enhance their vocabulary, leading to improved comprehension across all content areas!

April 22nd, originally part of Spring Break, is now an instructional day as we have to make up a snow day. Students and staff will be in schools that day. Also, due to missing so many days, February 7th is no longer a 2 hour early dismissal. It will be a full day. Any additional days will be made up after May 30th.
